11 Tips For Booking Holidays

Thinking about where to go on your next trip and don’t know where to start? Well, here’s some tips from Wander Mum (and Dad) to help you get the best holiday at the best price. Remember, getting your perfect hol does sometimes take time. I have lost my husband for evenings on end as he sits staring at his tablet, searching for deals. That said, the first one is…

1. Have patience. Take your time to shop deals, go on comparison sites and play the market.

2. Book hotels you can cancel free of charge so if you come across a cheaper one you can book and cancel (booking.com and hotels.com usually have this and often have a buy now pay later option too. On Hotels.com, we have found deals on extra nights free).

3. If you have done point 2 then keep searching in case the price goes down or you find a better deal. My husband has booked and rebooked the same hotel for our trip to Vietnam three times because he keeps finding a better deal!

4. Use multi-search websites which compare lots of different sites eg. Kayak, Travel Supermarket, Trip Advisor.

5. Check tour operators. They often have competitive prices which aren’t advertised on comparison sites like Kayak, Agoda and ebookers. Some of the ones we’ve used for ‘luxury’ hols include Destinology and Kenwood travel.

6. If you do book through a travel agent or tour operator, ensure it is signed up by a protection scheme such as ABTA and ATOL.

7. Consider paying for some hotels in advance so you aren’t forking out a lump sum at the end. Alternatively, sometimes you only have to pay a deposit.

8. If you do pay in advance, do so with a credit card rather than debit. If for some reason the holiday contract is breached, airline collapses etc then your credit card company is jointly responsible.

9. Book your holiday when sales are on – in September and January!

10. If you are a frequent flyer it can pay to be loyal and pick up air miles to put towards future flights. A large chunk of our recent long haul flight was paid with air miles.

11. Get a credit card which gives you air miles so whenever you make a purchase you are earning points towards future flights!

I've always loved to travel so when my two daughters came along, I didn't stop. Travelling as a family can have its ups and downs but I love showing my children the world and helping others navigate travelling with children in tow.

  1. We have definitely found bargains booking in the quiet times. We booked our latest holiday in the middle of December and got bargain prices – I guess most people are thinking about Christmas then? #thelist

    1. Totally! Some people get ‘Christmas block’ when they just can’t see beyond it. Dec is definitely a good time to book. Hope you had a good hol! Xxx
