Ever since my husband pointed out a “scary pumpkin” sitting in a display in a supermarket, my daughter can’t get “scary pumpkins” out of her head. So to avoid any future fears of pumpkins, or Halloween (which I know is SUPPOSED to be scary but I don’t want her to be scarred for life), I bought the pumpkin and decided to have a go at carving a non-scary face into it in our first attempt at pumpkin carving.
I found some pumpkin carving inspiration from fellow bloggers and a handy template and guide on netmums. Now, I was never top of the class in art but I’ll give anything a go! My daughter (26 months old) was relatively redundant although she did decide what image to carve out.
So, here’s what I did.
First, I took off the top and scooped the inside out. By the way, pumpkins are incredibly tough and just full of seeds. Despite their size, I can’t imagine there is much to actually eat in them. Put it this way, I don’t think I’ll be cheffing up pumpkin pie anytime soon.
After a short discussion with my daughter, showing her the online templates, she decided on the “cat face” and I set about recreating it with my own fair hands (if you have a printer which actually works, unlike me, you can simply print the template).
I then sellotaped it onto the pumpkin…

I took the paper template off and set about carving the feline face into the pumpkin.
TA DA!! Not too shabby, ay? Just goes to show, whatever your artistic ability, pumpkin carving can be done! My daughter is still a bit too young to help out – knives aren’t the safest thing to do craft with. But, she seemed to like the finished article. She didn’t tell me it was “scary” and recognised that it was a cat! So, job done!
