Day Out At Pick-Your-Own Crockford Bridge Farm

My daughter has a new obsession. It starts early in the morning and goes on all day, whenever she spies our raspberry bush in garden. It’s fruit picking. Ever since the wonderfully hot weather appeared, one of the first things she asks (after breakfast, of course) is if she can go in the garden to see if there is any fruit ready to pick. Such a simple pleasure but one which is full of delight and excitement.

With my lonely strawberry bush looking already bare and the raspberries still pretty green, I needed to feed this new obsession (literally) so I set out to find one of the nearest Pick-Your-Own farms so she could collect fruit until her heart is content.

We settled upon Crockford Bridge Farm – apparently the nearest Pick-Your-Own to London. A friend recommended it, with the promise of a playground, soft play and picnic area – I felt this was all the critera I needed for a day out with my two year old daughter, Mrs T.

Upon arrival, my husband thought it a good idea to get an ice cream from the shop selling Gelateria Danieli ice creams. Of course, we had to get Mrs T one too. Cue a huge, sticky, chocolatey mess on hands, face and all down her dress – hurrah!

Once sorted with some empty punnets from the shed-like shop, we set out on our short walk to the strawberry field. There were PLENTY to pick – early July is perfect strawberry picking time!

As a family, we all enjoyed picking the strawberries  and seeing who could find the biggest ones. We explained to Mrs T that she should try to pick the dark red ones. She had a great time finding them.

And she was very pleased with herself when she discovered and picked them!

It wasn’t long before our boxes were bulging – check out our haul!

Mrs T found the ones on the bottom branches and could spy some hidden away from my view and I picked them from the upper branches. A perfect team! Every time Mrs T discovered one, she would cry out to me, very excitedly: “I’ve found one, I’ve found one. Mummy, I’ve found one.” Daddy had gradually lost interest  and wandered off (he’s clearly not a big raspberry fan).

With enough raspberries to keep us going for a few days, we headed back to the shop and the playground (we weren’t going to get away without that getting used).

Although Mrs T wanted a picnic at one of the tables, we hadn’t brought any food, so we went to the garden centre just next door (so handy) for some lunch and a bit of plant buying. Mrs T found the soft play…

After dragging her away, we headed home, looking forward to eating some scummy fresh strawberries and raspberries. Mrs T had a fab time but next time we go, I’ll make sure I wear my trainers rather than my flip-flops… farms really are dirty places!

VERDICT

Cranford Bridge Farm has a perfect set up for children: PYO, a playground AND soft play – need I say anymore? Pick-Your-Own is a fantastic activity for children, helping to educate them about the origin of vegetables and fruit and for them take an active part in collecting them. Mrs T loved it! We will definitely go back again. We only spend a couple of hours there (including lunch) so it isn’t a time consuming activity. I actually found it incredibly relaxing too – being out in quiet and fresh air, with just the sounds of nature. A good break from life in London. We just had to pay for the fruit and that was pretty reasonable: £6.50 for two punnets of strawberries and £5 for the raspberries.

Pin for later

I've always loved to travel so when my two daughters came along, I didn't stop. Travelling as a family can have its ups and downs but I love showing my children the world and helping others navigate travelling with children in tow.

  1. Aww so nice reading this post. We haven’t had a chance to do it this year, but last year we came to Cockbridge too and did exactly the same thing 🙂 Great minds… Mrs T looked like she loved it – we thought the lunch was really good there! Thanks so much for linking up with #MondayEscapes

    1. Hahaha… I’m not surprised. I got a bit scared though because there were loads of signs at the farm telling you not to eat until they’d been weighed so told Mrs T she couldn’t have them until later – amazingly she obliged! Xx

  2. I WISH my daughter liked strawberries – she is useless. I would have probably eaten a box and had to pick another. The pictures are so cute – your daughter is lovely and it looks like she had such a good time! Thanks so much for linking up to #bestandworst and I hope you enjoyed scoffing your haul!! xx

    1. Ah, thank you. We had a great time. Can’t believe your daughter isn’t a strawberry fan… Have to say mine likes raspberries that bit more but they were both delicious! Thanks for hosting #bestandworst xx

    1. Yay, do it – it’s a lot of fun. Was surprised at his good my daughter was at not scoffing them but think she was so excited about picking them she forgot all about if (plus she was probably full from the ice cream my husband got her)! Enjoy. Thanks for guest hosting #pocolo xx

    1. Hey Merlinda, that’s a shame…am sure there’s loads of wild berry plants around those. I remember there being loads of blackberries near where I grew up which I used to pick! X

  3. I love fruit picking. It’s so much fun! We took our daughter recently and she spent most of her time eating them before she got into the habit of putting them in the punnet. But yes, trainers are a must. It’s such a great way to teach where food comes from isn’t it! xx #countrykids

  4. This really does look like a great place to go fruit picking, I love the mix of fruit fields and soft play, after all fruit picking only holds the kids attention so long and after making the effort to go it is lovely to have some extra entertainment there as well. I love that you have fruit in the garden too, we are trying to cultivate our orchard here at Coombe Mill as I really like the idea of home grown. Thank you for sharing on Country Kids

    1. Hey Fiona, it was a great place to go and, like you say, very handy to have the soft play and playground too. It’s great having raspberries on tap in our garden. But, an orchard – wow how wonderful. Good luck with the cultivating – I can imagine they are a bit harder to crack than a raspberry bush. Thanks for hosting #countrykids xx

  5. How lovely! Look at that smiling face, she is clearly loving picking all the fruit. Fantastic that she’s so good at picking the rip fruit and not eating it!

Lots of fun to be had at the park and soft play as well, a perfect day out.

Thanks for linking up to #Whatevertheweather 🙂 x

  6. I love fruit picking. It’s such a great summer activity and a really good way to teach where food comes from. It’s so sweet how excited she gets over raspberries. It’s great that they have a park/play area as well there, I wish our local pick-your-own had more things like this there. Thank you so much for linking up to #whatevertheweather x
