Throwback Thursday: University Freshers Week

I’ve been hearing a fair bit about ’empty nest syndrome’ this week. Feelings of depression and sadness some parents experience when their children leave home. Fortunately, I have a long way to go before my daughter goes anywhere (she’s only three) but it did bring back memories of when I started university all those years ago (17 to be precise – EEK)!!

Turning over my loft for old photos, I was surprised at how few I had from freshers week at Loughborough university. I quickly realised that was a very good thing indeed! I can’t remember a lot about that week which I think just about sums it up. The photo below shows my friend Rach and I at one of the campus bars during our first few days at uni. We met as we moved our belongings into the same house in one of the university’s halls of residence. I think we probably bonded over blokes and booze.

I must say, Rach and I look rather glamorous for uni students, no doubt supping classy drinks such as reef, bacardi breezer, and snakebite black (the Loughborough drink known as a ‘nasty’). I can assure you we didn’t look quite as glamorous by the end of the night (although thankfully I have no photographic evidence to prove it). We have since had many, many more hilarious, raucous and random nights out together. In fact, she helped my husband and I get together! So thanks for that Rach, for being a fab friend – and for all the amazing times we have had together. Here’s to many more!

I've always loved to travel so when my two daughters came along, I didn't stop. Travelling as a family can have its ups and downs but I love showing my children the world and helping others navigate travelling with children in tow.

  1. What a lovely photo, It’s nice your still friends after all these years, I never went to uni but I still have friends from when I was 5. Good friends are rare and a treasure.
