My London: Five Places Special To Me

London isn’t just a great city to live in. It’s a great city. Full stop. I always swell with pride when people from all over the world tell me it is one of their favourite cities. I know it isn’t for all but I think it has something for almost everyone.

Regent Street, London

I moved to the capital almost eleven years ago but sometime feel like I’ve barely scratched its surface. There are always new bar and restaurants to discover, neighbourhoods to explore and a rich history to learn. London can be busy, noisy and not always easy to traverse with a buggy but it’s my city and I love it. Here are some of the places in the city that hold a special significance to me. This is by no means an exhaustive list but some of my top picks and why they are important to me.

Westminster

It is hard not to love this part of London: so many iconic buildings in the space of a few square metres. I often work from our Westminster office and relish being in the area when I do. My walk from the station would take me across Westminster bridge where I would gaze at the London Eye standing on the banks of the Thames.

Then looking up, I can view the iconic London symbol, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. A short walk and you pass Westminster Abbey, the scene of so many Royal occasions. It isn’t a bad route to work, is it? Walking past the political centre of England certainly makes me feel alive and a part of the city buzz. Parliament Square usually has some interesting protests going on too.

Clapham

After university, the lure of London and its abundance of jobs and opportunities meant many of my friends congregated in London, or more specifically, Clapham. The suburb in south-west London was popular with graduates at the time (it probably still is). Although I lived in neighbouring Putney, I spent a lot of time with friends in Clapham and my now-husband. He shared a house with mutual friends and they threw the most epic house parties. We were all in our mid-20s, young, no kids and enjoying life. It was a great time.

Friends in Clapham

There are several parts to Clapham: the old town, south Clapham and Clapham Common which stretches across the borough with its 220 acres of land. In the summer, music festivals like South West Four are held there. Clapham is a bustling area with plenty of restaurants and bars as well as the cheesy club Infernos which I somehow managed to avoid. I remember going to Clapham Picturehouse and being amazed you could enjoy a bottle wine while you watched a film. I saw the first Sex in the City film there.

Islington

My husband and I lived in Islington in north London for three years, our first house together. Slap bang on the main drag of Upper Street, the flat was tiny and noisy but the location so vibrant. Restaurants, bars, gastropubs and boutique shops were on our doorstep while we were just a few tube stops away from central London.

Upper Street, Islington, London

At the weekend, we’d sometimes see football fans head to Arsenal’s Emirates stadium while Highbury Park was the nearby green space to get some quiet. A walk or jog along Regents Canal was a welcome sight away from the busy street above. For shopping Camden Passage is packed with antiques and vintage goods.

Islington has a lot of good, affordable restaurants too. We went out, a lot. For Turkish we’d go to Gallipoli, for French, Le Mercury and Ottolenghi’s deli was always a treat. Fredericks is also one of my top restaurants if you are looking for something high end. For culture there was the Almeida theatre, Union Chapel for music as well as a few pub theatres and comedy nights. There was always something going on.

When staying in we’d head to our local independent wine shop, The Sampler, where you can try the wine before you buy. An impressive selection of wines and welcoming, knowledgable staff, you could spend a long time in there…and we often did!

Trafalgar Square

For many Trafalgar Square is the home of Nelson’s Column, the fourth plinth and the National Gallery. For us it is where we got married! We exchanged vows at St Martin in the Fields, the church on the edge of the famous square. Trafalgar Square, London

The church was designed by the famous architect James Gibbs in the 18th century who drew inspiration from Sir Christopher Wren’s works. It is a warm and welcoming church which does a lot of work for the homeless.

After we were married, we walked through Trafalgar Square, mingling with the tourists and getting our pictures taken by Nelson’s column.

We then did an impromptu dance before heading to our reception at the Institute of Directors on Pall Mall. What a special day! I thought I would include our short video montage of the day too.

Richmond

We live very close to this London suburb in west London. It is the place we started another phase of our life which soon gave us our two daughters. Compared to Islington, Richmond feels like the countryside with the beautiful River Thames weaving through it and historic houses such as Ham House and Marble Hill House standing majestically with Hampton Court a short drive away.

Rowing boats by Richmond Bridge

A wander up Richmond Hill gives views across the river towards Twickenham stadium while venture along to Richmond Park and you can see across London. The Royal Park is one of my favourites where deer roam free, cyclists cruise and joggers breathe in the fresh air. There’s much to explore. I love the Isabella Plantation and the east side is great for biking with kids.

The town centre has good shopping while a walk over Richmond Bridge, the oldest surviving Thames bridge in London is a must. If you fancy a splurge, The Petersham hotel has excellent views over the river while the food at The Bingham is hard to beat. You can hire a rowing boat if you dare or get a ferry up the river into central London. I love running or walking along the tow path, a place to catch your thoughts, get inspired and snap some photos!

I've always loved to travel so when my two daughters came along, I didn't stop. Travelling as a family can have its ups and downs but I love showing my children the world and helping others navigate travelling with children in tow.

  1. I love London too! I would love to do a walk like yours to work everyday. The great thing about the many suburbs around London such as the ones you’ve mentioned is that you’re still in London but yet it feels like you’re not so when the busyness and noise gets too much you can always escape 🙂

    1. Totally agree Natalie… it’s nicely away from the hustle and bustle of central London. Unfortunately the walk wasn’t everyday…more like once or twice a week but I loved doing it!

  2. Ah, I used to live in Stoke Newington and popped into Islington often. Thanks for reminding me about Gallipoli and Le Mercury – I need to go back and visit, for old time’s sake! Like you I have a patchwork of London memories, spread across the town. I’d find it very difficult to leave, I think. I love this post – thanks for sharing! #citytripping

  3. What a lovely post! Your description of your walk to work is so unlike how I used to drag myself out of bed to make a long boring drive halfway across Singapore to get to work before the sun is even out. Maybe I would have enjoyed going to work more if I had a view of London Eye and Thames enroute. I wonder if that’s why so many of my friends went to work in London!

I particularly love the wedding pics. Gave me goosebumps! #CityTripping

    1. Haha – I didn’t get to do that walk everyday unfortunately but it was a great treat when I did and made the whole work experience a lot better! Glad you liked the pics…have added the video too if you fancied checking that out.

  4. Ahhh what a really wonderful place to have your wedding dance. I go there often and think I’ll remember you next time I’m there. I just love London so much. I think it might be my most favourite city in the whole world….although I’ve never been to New York and I always wonder if that might win once I see it.

  5. I lived in London for 4 years after uni and had a ball! It is still my favourite city in the world and we love taking our 2 boys down for the weekend at least once a year. We lived at London Bridge and my then boyfriend (now my husband!) walked into the City to get to work and I worked in Baker Street. We had such fun, and I remember we used to go for runs on a Saturday morning up to Parliament and back on the south side of the river past the London Eye!

    1. So great to hear about your love of London too Jo. What a great location you lived in! I bet it’s great to go back with the boys and show them where you used to spend your time!

  6. I have never been to London but it has always been the place I have been dying to go- ever since I was little. We have plans to go for our 10th wedding anniversary in 3 years, if not before. I live in the Chicago area (suburbs now but I lived three years in the city.) My favorite spot in the city is the Lincoln Park neighborhood. It has the best of many worlds- restaurants, open spaces, a zoo, and of course, it’s so close to Lake Michigan. #citytripping

  7. Lovely post – I lived in London in my 20’s and I returned there to have my daughter. She was born in Roehampton and we lived in Earlsfield until she was 2 1/2. Lovely memories. We love visiting London together and next month we are visiting for our annual Christmas trip to Harrods, Covent Garden etc.

  8. Elizabeth, this is so awesome! I like the places you have presented in here but I am amazed at your wedding pictures. You look stunning during your wedding day. Plus, dancing in the square was a genius idea. Have you thought on how many tourist photos you appear? #citytripping
Ruth recently posted…Szentendre: Day Trip from BudapestMy Profile

    1. Thank you so much Ruth, very kind. The dance was very impromptu. I noticed a lot of tourists taking photographs. Weird to think we are part of their holiday memories!

  9. Elizabeth reading this was like following a map of my own life in parts. Clapham was the first placed I lived in London after Uni and ironically enough having gone full circle around London – including Islington and Richmond I have ended up between the commons as it is fondly known and very close to Clapham again. If I had to add to already close to perfect list it would be Covent Garden for its vibrancy and variety and Shoreditch for when you want to explore the wilder side. #bloggerclubuk

    1. Oh wow! How funny but brilliant! Yes, I agree Shoreditch is a great place to go out and do some vintage shopping too. Covent Garden too – always do much going on there. Thanks so much for stopping by xx

  10. Oh what a lovely post and your wedding video is just gorgeous – what a fabulous place to get married. Reading your post brought back a lot of memories for me – I worked in central London for six years, and for a while the office was in Vauxhall and I used to walk along the river admiring the view of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament on the opposite side of the river. I now live just outside of London – near enough to be able to get in easily on the train but also able to get into the countryside easily too which I love – I don’t miss working in London but I do enjoy having a day out in town every so often. Fab post 🙂 #bloggerclubuk

    1. Thank you so much Louise! I know what you mean, it’s great to have the countryside but be within touching distance of London so you are close enough to go there if you want to.

  11. While I’ve never lived in London, it’s one of my favorite places and visit whenever possible! I’m definitely planning a trip to Richmond Park next time I’m in town. We recently spent the day in Camden, that was fun!

  12. Lovely to read about your personal connections and see your wedding dress! I’ve never lived in London but it’s only 45 minutes away on the train so I’ve explored lots of areas. I do enjoy Westminster though. I know it’s super touristy but it’s amazing how many iconic sights you can see in the space of a few minutes. I ran the London Marathon last year too and running through it for the final part of the event was incredible, and a huge relief! #Farawayfiles

I love Richmond too and Hampstead too – it just feels really cool. I can dream can’t I!?
PS. Your dress was beautiful, as were you! *ok, i’ll take my weird stalker hat off now*

  16. What a great idea for a post! I loved reading about your London memories, Elizabeth. You seem to have lived in more places than most Londoners who tend to stick North or South of the river. Loved seeing your wedding pix too! I lived in Clapham for years and loved it, slap bang in the middle of the Common. The Picture House was one of my favourites. Thanks for bringing your wonderful memories to #FarawayFiles
Clare Thomson (Suitcases and Sandcastles) recently posted…Faraway Files #7My Profile

    1. Thank you Clare! Been good to experience north and south and west London. All a bit different in their own way. Clapham was lots of fun! Sounds like you were in a great position there! X

  17. What a lovely post and how amazing to get married at St Martins in the fields – love the impromptu dance photos. It’s an amazing city to live in, isn’t it? My walk to work used to take me past the Tower of London and I never got tired of seeing that. #citytripping

  18. Love this! So many special places in London for me too – I wish I had got married here, your wedding looks stunning!

I lived in Battersea (near Clapham Junction) and that area hold dear to me – the ship pub by wandsworth bridge is full of memories for me. Similarly, living in Balham when we had baby one, and the endless walks I did around Wandsworth Common!

Centrally, my first job was near Leicester Square, and discovering all the little side streets running around Covent Garden and having Japanese food for the first time (yes, I was that provincial!)

I also love north of Soho, Charlotte Street, where there is a really strong community feel.
